It reminds us of our obligation as Jews to help others. We may not finish everything we begin during Mitzvah Week, but we do all we can. Every year that we come together as a community for Mitzvah Week, we make a difference in our community, in our Temple and in ourselves. This year’s Mitzvah Week begins with filling backpacks and toiletry kits. At Friday, services on November 3 we will honor our Mitzvah Heroes with the Temple Judea Tikkun Olam Award. This award is presented to temple members who have led our community in repairing the world. On Saturday, we will study Torah with a Tikkun Olam text study to better understand our traditions and our commitment to these core values. Sunday, November 5 is Mitzvah Day. We will meet at the Tarzana Campus at 9:00 a.m. before regrouping for a day of hands on Mitzvah work across the San Fernando Valley. Participate in Mitzvah Week at Temple Judea. Gail Sherman, our adult member, is being celebrated for chairing the Ethical Action Committee during the last two years, increasing the committee’s visibility within the temple and the community and expanding its base of projects. Shelli Goldzband, our teen member, was chosen for overseeing the Mitzvah Day PB&J project for many years, helping to set up itsyourcommunity.org, a temple sponsored website with volunteer opportunities for kids and teens, and for heading up the Franklin Canyon project last year. We are inspired and awed in the presence of these two wonderful women. Through their leadership and dedication to the values of our community and tradition, they have made a world of difference in the lives of many. Please join us for Shabbat Services and help us honor Gail and Shelli. Friday, November 3, 2006 at 8 p.m at the Tarzana Campus. Tikkun Olam Text Study Why do we do what we do? What are the underlying principles of the Jewish tradition that require us to show compassion and care for the widow, the orphan and the stranger? Join our rabbis for a Shabbat morning text study to explore these core values and teachings of Judaism. Saturday, November 4, 2006 at 9:30 am at the West Campus. [Panel 5] Child’$ Play—Children Helping Children (School on Wheels/Toiletry Kits) We don’t need peanut butter or jelly, chips or even fruit this year. Just your bread—the kind with the dollar signs on it. Instead of requesting sandwich making supplies this year, we’re asking for donations to defray the cost of the school supplies for the backpacks and the items for the toiletry kits. Mitzvah Week 2006 is all about YOUR CHILDREN helping other CHILDREN. Your child helps another child get much needed school supplies and toiletries. You support this effort by donating Chai ($18) or any variation of it. That’s about the cost of two movie tickets. And you won’t receive any bad reviews about this purchase. School on Wheels backpacks and the toiletry kits will be assembled during Mitzvah Week, Oct. 29-Nov. 3.
